Caesar Keeps Brutus Close
Trust in those you hold dear, yet beware of hidden hearts.
Smooth words may conceal private aims, and closeness may hide betrayal.
False friendship brings sorrow and regret, and misfortune comes unawares.
Guard your words and keep your counsel, for what is spoken cannot be recalled.
When trust is misplaced, disaster follows swiftly and there is no turning back.
The friendly face may hide a knife; speak little, trust less, and beware above all.
Caesar’s Trust and Brutus’s Blade
After defeating Pompey, Julius Caesar pardoned Marcus Junius Brutus and drew him back into public life, eventually appointing him praetor. Brutus possessed family prestige and had reasons both personal and political to oppose one-man rule, yet Caesar kept him near and trusted him despite warnings of conspiracy. On the Ides of March in 44 BCE, Brutus joined the assassins in the Senate. The episode became the classic warning that intimacy, eloquence, and apparent reconciliation do not always reveal a person’s true intention.
