Hersilia Stops the Battle
Roman legend tells that the women taken from the Sabines had become wives and mothers in Rome when their fathers and husbands met in battle. Hersilia and the other women rushed between the armies, carrying children and pleading that neither side make them widows or orphans. Their intervention stopped the fighting and helped unite Romans and Sabines into one community. The episode makes reconciliation an act of courage: the mediator enters the danger that armed pride cannot resolve.
