Diogenes Chooses the Sun Over a King
Let the world be noisy, in all directions.
Close your eyes to what does not concern you, and keep your heart on what truly matters.
In quiet simplicity, wisdom grows, and fortune finds its way to those who stand firm in their own path.
Freedom from needless desire opens a brighter tomorrow.
The Philosopher Who Wanted Only Sunlight
When Alexander the Great visited Diogenes of Sinope, the king offered to grant him any wish. Diogenes, who had deliberately rejected luxury and social convention, asked only that Alexander move aside because he was blocking the sun. The reply astonished the conqueror, who reportedly said that if he were not Alexander he would wish to be Diogenes. The encounter contrasts external command with inner independence: the person who needs little cannot easily be controlled by wealth, rank, or favor.
