Numa Receives Rome's Call
When times are still and fortune seems to sleep, be still as well and your heart in quiet keep.
Do not contend with tides not yet arrived; in patience and in peace, your strength survives.
When destiny at last begins to turn, the humble path will lead to heights you earn.
He who rules himself shall one day guide the many; in righteousness and wisdom, victory is plenty.
So wait with faith, for every season's course brings bloom in time and crowns the just with force.
Be like the quiet river that carves the stone; when the time is right, all hearts will be your own.
Numa Accepts Rome’s Call
After the death of Romulus, Roman tradition says the people called Numa Pompilius from the quiet Sabine countryside to become their king. Numa was reluctant, preferring reflection and peace to ambition, but accepted when persuaded that public duty required him. His reign was remembered for religious institutions, civic order, and the tempering of a warlike people through law and ritual. His story teaches that the person who governs the self in obscurity may later be trusted to guide many when the proper season arrives.
