Marius Hides in the Marshes
Even in the darkest hour, endure with patience.
What seems like a dead end today may yet turn, for fortune moves in cycles, and new opportunities will come in their time.
After hardship comes the turn of the tide.
Marius in the Marshes
After political enemies seized Rome, the aging general Gaius Marius fled for his life. Pursued along the Italian coast, he hid in marshland near Minturnae and was captured, but the man sent to kill him lost his nerve. Marius escaped to Africa and later returned when political fortune reversed. His survival was grim rather than glorious. The scene counsels endurance at the lowest point: concealment, patience, and preserving life may be the only achievements possible until the cycle changes.
Meaning of This Lot
This lot expresses its lesson through Marius Hides in the Marshes. Even in the darkest hour, endure with patience. What seems like a dead end today may yet turn, for fortune moves in cycles, and new opportunities will come in their time.
Its practical counsel is therefore specific: career: Progress is restricted; avoid bold moves.; wealth: Finances are weak; avoid speculation.; love: Distance or hurt requires patience and care.; health: Maintain careful routines and restore balance.; relationships: Mixed alliances require clear boundaries.; travel: Journeys face delay; travel only if needed. The overall judgment is great misfortune, so act in proportion to that sign—welcome openings where they are offered, but respect every warning contained in the verses.
